For the purpose of this Wiki, the properties of an e-assessment system will be divided into the following categories:

Ideally, an assessment system would implement the following architecture properties1):
designed as a standalone e-assessment system,
ability to exchange content, user data and components with other e-assessment systems,
pluggable into LMS (learning management systems), or other systems
Other requests
flexibility to include assessments based on different theories and models,
completeness of the supported assessment process,
reusability (identification, isolation and exchange) of useful objects (items, assessment plans)
medium neutrality (when possible, the system also supports paper and pencil tests)
